JUDGING A BOOK BY ITS COVER

As a publisher there comes a time when you must reject the lesson drummed into your head by your mother and your high school guidance counselor and face the fact that books are indeed judged by their covers. There’s no point in debating that fact in the ten-second window your book has to make its first impression. Your first hurdle is convincing the retail and wholesale buyers that your book is worthy of placing in their stock. The second hurdle is grabbing consumer attention, and very often that cover is the only reason a person will pick the book up or walk past. A few simple tips:

1. Ask for a variety of opinions on your cover before you go to print. Get as many opinions and as much feedback as possible. Seek advice from book industry professionals if possible. Also, considering doing a test market to your audience. For example, if your book is geared toward older adults and retirees, you could visit a local senior center.

2. Go to your local bookstore and compare your cover art to similar titles. These are the books that were deemed worthy of shelf space, so they should provide the best model for what buyers are looking for.

3. If you can’t afford the services of a professional designer, but don’t feel you can produce a cover on your own, contact a local university or art school and see if they can recommend a student willing to take the commission.

4. Create a few different covers so you can get a feel for what works and what doesn’t.

5. Read the back cover copy aloud. Read it aloud to other people. You have 45 seconds or so to grab your reader. Writing 50,000 words is often easier than the three sentence summation of your book.

ALLBOOKS INTERVIEW

Please state your name and location.

Debra Shiveley Welch – Westerville, Ohio USA

Tell us the title and publisher of your book: Son of My Soul – The Adoption of Christopher, Saga Books

Tell us about yourself:

I was born in Columbus, Ohio and have lived in the Greater Columbus area all of my life. I now reside in Westerville, Ohio with my husband, Mark, and our son, Christopher, who is also a published author. I am an Amazon Best Selling Author and the recipient of the FaithWriter’s Gold Seal of Approval and Books and Authors Award of Excellence recipient, and winner of Books and Authors Best Non Fiction Book – 2007.

A third generation poet, I have been writing since age nine. In my early twenties, I had my own column in the Baltimore Eagle Gazette. Later, I worked as editor for several newsletters, including as development editor for The Parent Connection for The League Against Child Abuse.

The defining moment in my life was the day that I became a mother, and our attorney placed my son in my arms. I drew him to me, breathed him in, memorizing his unique scent, imprinting his essence into my very being. It brought me full circle. I knew that this was a very special calling in my life, to be with this soul, and to share my life with this child. To this day, I revel in his unique perfume.

My other works include A Very Special Child, a children’s book that explains adoption in a spiritual way, and Jesus Gandhi Oma Mae Adams, a murder mystery co-authored with Linda Lee Green.

When was the book released?

During National Adoption Month, November of 2007.

Give us an overview of your book.

Son of My Soul – The Adoption of Christopher is the story of my journey through loneliness, poverty and neglect, my triumph over a turbulent past, and the joy of mothering my adopted child.

My autobiography begins with my uncle’s prophecy of my birth, and soon turns to a story of sorrow and abuse. A vow made at fourteen-years-of-age to save a child through adoption gives me new purpose, as I strive to survive a life of neglect and abandonment.

Breaking free from my past, I think of my childhood as “boot camp,” and apply the lessons I learned as an example of how not to mother my future child.

My joy is finally manifested in the form of an infant boy born with cleft lip and palate. I realize that my vow has indeed come to fruition, and that I have finally found “The Son of Her Soul.”

What inspired you to write this book?

My publisher wore me down. Inspired by the relationship between me and my son, she repeatedly requested that I write my autobiography chronicling my life and the story of how Chris came to be my son.

It was an emotional write, but I am glad I did it. My son now has a book written to him and for him by his mother.

How is your book different from other books in this genre?

My book is an autobiography, but it is also a love story. It is also the chronicle of a child who decides at a very early age to break the circle of abuse, way before it became a popular ideology.

Where can people buy your book?

Pretty much anywhere:

Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Buy.com. You can order it from your local bookstore and from my publisher at www.sagabooks.net.

Are you working on another book? If so when do you expect it to be published? I am now working on Cedar Woman, my first romance about a woman of the Lakota Sioux tribe who opens the first Native American Restaurant in Westerville, Ohio.

I’m hoping to finish it by this summer for a late Fall release.

If you self published, what advice can you give to fellow writers?

I am not self-published, but I can offer what I think is the most important advise of all: edit. Edit, edit and then edit and then hire a professional editor. Put out the best work you can.

If published traditionally, tell us how you benefited:

Besides working with a great publishing house, I have enjoyed seeing my works published with no outlay of cost. Saga has worked hard to create an attractive look for my works and has even supplied illustrations when required.

I am also in libraries throughout the world.

Can you share one of your marketing successes with us?

Network tirelessly. Put in the hours. Go to bookstores and offer to do book signings. Promote yourself to the best of your ability.

How did you find Allbook Reviews and what are you hoping for in your relationship with us?

Allbooks contacted me. I am hoping to increase my exposure.

Was the low cost a surprise? What other things would you like Allbook Reviews to offer writers?

The low cost was a great surprise. There is always a need for good editors.

Thank you for this interview and best of luck with your book.

The 7 Question Interview with Shirley Roe

To order books by this author, visit WritingRaw’s Amazon Book Store by clicking on the link below:

http://astore.amazon.com/writingraw-20

Shirley Roe is the Managing Editor of the Allbooks Review (founded in 2000 as a review source for POD authors, and voted one of the 101 Best Websites for Writers by Writer's Digest for two years straight)and the author of a historical fiction series known as the Martha Whittaker series. Some of her novels are:

• The Whittaker Family Reunion
• Of Dreams and Nightmares
• A Call to Faith and Freedom

Her official website can be accessed here: http://www.allbookreviews.com

The WritingRaw.com 7 Question Interview

Please let us know who you are and how we might know you:

I am Shirley A. Roe, author of three historical fiction novels and the Managing Editor of Allbooks Review. Allbooks Review is a review and promotional source for authors from all over the world. I encourage your visitors to check out: www.allbookreviews.com for their review, editing, and promotional needs.

Any news you would like to share concerning upcoming projects:

I am currently working on the third book in the Martha Whittaker series, Return to Whittakerville, which is to be released in the summer of 2009 by RealTime Publishing.

Thoughts concerning the current state of the literary world:

More and more authors are getting published thanks to the many POD sources and ebook publishing. I feel this is an excellent way for authors and writers to get their work to the waiting public. As founder of Allbooks Review, this is a constant stream of new authors needing our services. The economy has forced the closing of many newspapers and magazines around the world, however the internet seems to grow stronger in its place in the literary world.

Who is your favorite author and why?

My favorite author is Catherine Cookson. I am a historical fiction fan and no one compares to Cookson in this genre. I have read all of her books. Another author that I admire is Mathias Freese, author of The I Tetralogy. His work is haunting. It makes you think.

Have you written a book you love that you have not been able to publish?

I have been very fortunate in having my books: Dreams and Nightmares: The Martha Whittaker Story, The Whittaker Family Reunion, and A Call to Faith and Freedom all published. Return to Whittakerville is the third book in the Whittaker series and is being published in 2009. All of my books are available in both print and ebook format, including Kindle.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I would like to thank my readers for letting me know how much they love the Whittaker family and look forward to the next book. Reviews on Amazon have been 5 star and I appreciate all of the reviewer's comments very much. Celtic history buffs loved A Call to Faith and Freedom and I have had several people contact me with questions on Druids and the Celtic practices portrayed in the book.

How do you feel about what WritingRaw.com and other literary sharing sites are attempting to do for new writers?

I think authors both new and experienced need sites like this one. It helps to promote not only our work, but ourselves as upcoming authors and writers. I thank you for this interview and your continuing support.

WritingRaw.com would like to thank Ms. Roe for taking the time out of her busy schedule for this interview.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES IN EDITING?

There are three basic types of editing- Content editing, copyediting, and proofreading.
Authors often get confused when looking for or being told their work needs an edit.

Content editing involves addressing the content of the manuscript -- does the story flow well? Are the ideas clear? How does the dialogue flow? Is the material well presented? Does this area need fleshing out, does that area need cutting back? It's getting into the ideas of the piece, not just the words.

Copy-editing involves grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, etc. Often, copyediting can involve trying to restructure sentences so that they are more readable. Some people regard copy-editing as very simple "check the grammar and nothing else." Others like to have the material reworked if necessary, often providing suggestions as to how to make it a better "read."

Proofreading is just that: Making sure that there are no spelling, punctuation, or format errors. Since that tends to be the simplest process it usually takes less time, and therefore usually costs less.

ALLBOOKS INTERVIEW
Please state your name and location. (city and State or Province, Country)

Peter Yellowlees MD, Sacramento, California, USA

Tell us the title and publisher of your book:

Your Health in the Information Age – how you and your doctor can use the Internet to work together. Self published through iUniverse.com. Supported by links and other content at www.InformationAgeHealth.com

Tell us about yourself:

I am Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Health Informatics Program at the University of California Davis. I am also deputy editor of the Medscape Journal of Medicine and have lived in England, Australia and the USA. I am an internationally recognized expert in health on the Internet and my current projects involve virtual reality using Second Life, telemedicine, email and video consulting and bioterrorism responses. I have written over 150 scientific articles and four books, have lectured in more than 20 countries, and have undertaken many media interviews. I live with my wife Barb, in Sacramento, California.

When was the book released?

November 2008

Give us an overview of your book.

The practice of healthcare is about patients and doctors sharing information - both face to face, and online. Medicine is increasingly being practiced online, as we gradually move into the Information Age.

"Your Health in the Information Age” is an exciting new book that shows patients how they can work more closely with their doctors by using the internet effectively.

More than 10 million Americans search for health information on the Internet for themselves or for loved ones every single day. This books teaches how to use the internet to make yourself better.

Are you sick? Are you getting the best treatment? Do you want to check out alternative therapies? Do you understand your symptoms? Do you know why you are taking your medications? How can you monitor your health? Can you access your doctor easily? Do you know how experienced your doctor is, and whether he or she is expert in your illness? Learn how to answer all these questions in “Your health in the Information Age” and at the website that supports the book, and which contains most of the links mentioned in the book, at www.InformationAgeHealth.com

What inspired you to write this book?

Almost every patient I see as a doctor has already been on the Internet looking for information. It is apparent that they don’t know how to discriminate between good and bad websites, and good and potentially dangerous health information. I have been advising my patients on the best websites to go to, and the best ways of using the Internet to communicate with me, for some years, and have looked for a book like this that I could recommend to my patients. As nothing like it is available, I decided to write it myself.

How is your book different from other books in this genre?

There are no similar books that explain how to use the internet for healthcare. There are many that list lots of websites, but none that teach people how to use the internet effectively, as both an information search tool, and to allow them to collaborate better with their doctor, and strengthen the doctor-patient relationship.

Where can people buy your book?

From www.InformationAgeHealth.com , www.iUniverse.com and most online bookstores such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble

Are you working on another book? If so when do you expect it to be published?

I will most likely be writing a parallel book aimed more specifically at health professionals

If you self published, what advice can you give to fellow writers?

Check out the various major self-publishers – they are all a bit different from each other. Make sure you keep in close contact with your publisher, and that you respond to their questions in a timely manner. Remember that however you publish, you will most likely end up doing most of the marketing of the book yourself.

Can you share one of your marketing successes with us?

It is early days yet – but my website, which I built myself using templates from American Author, is proving reasonably popular, and I am using Google adwords to promote the site and the book. I know that a the book is selling reasonably well as I have already started to get good feedback which I am putting on my website at www.InformationAgeHealth.com

How did you find Allbooks Reviews and what are you hoping for in your relationship with us?

I wanted to find some professional sites to have book reviews undertaken, and found Allbooks Reviews via google. I have been very impressed by how responsive the process has been with Allbooks Reviews, and look forward to advertising on the site and seeing if I can create more interest in my book.

Was the low cost a surprise? What other things would you like Allbooks Reviews to offer writers?

It was a bit of a surprise, but I am also used to having reviews written by professional publications, where there is typically no charge for the review, because there is a charge for the magazine

Thank you for this interview and best of luck with your book.

The Whittaker Family Reunion by Shirley A. Roe has been nominated for the 2009 Indie Excellence Award.

Getting More Publicity - How to Be Galvanizing
by Paul J. Krupin, Direct Contact PR

You've written a book. Now what? It's time for some publicity. It's time to "spread the word."

You ask, "What do I put in a news release? What are the right words?"

What can you say that pushes the media's hot buttons? How do you now get published and interviewed so that you get media coverage that sells you and your products?

If you are going to jumpstart your publishing career you've got to give the media what they want!

And guess what -- what "they" really want turns out to be what most people in America want:

Stimulation!

It should come as no surprise. People want an emotional experience that takes them out of their boring, humdrum lives and temporarily takes them away -- transcends their reality to a time and place far, far away.

They want to experience the dramatic personal pain, suffering, pleasure or achievement that someone else is going through.

Look around you and you'll see that all news coverage is basically designed to cater to this very special goal -- this is what the Public wants.

They want to be stimulated. Emotionally. Not intellectually, but deep, deep, deep inside. They want to feel what it's like to be in someone else's shoes.

And once you realize this, you'll realize and learn how to push the media's hot buttons.

If you are going to be successful you must give them what they need.

This is not rocket science. It is psychology.

I reviewed the news releases that I've done for the past few years for authors and publishers, seeking to identify the common characteristics of communications that produced stellar media responses -- and the book sales that went with them. I sought to take a fresh look at the key
issues that appear in the marketing communications that produced the best success -- the ones that were what I call "galvanizing." It was a fun exercise.

Here are 22 points on the topic:

"How to be Galvanizing"

gal•va•nize (def.) startle: to stimulate to action; "...startled him awake"; "galvanized into action"

1. Be right and be first to tell people that you are right on.

2. Be wrong but keep trying to do it right and be the first to admit it, telling people what you did wrong and are doing about it.

3. Communicate clearly and help the people you can help the most. Put your audience first.

4. Demonstrate purpose. Do something noble and heroic and active, don't just talk about it.

5. Be passionate and surprise people by doing something interesting, unusual, and real.

6. Make people laugh and smile at you, with you and at themselves.

7. Give people relief from a headache or the pain they are experiencing now.

8. Show people a half naked man or woman. Why? Because it works. Now make it relevant or
meaningful to your ideas in some surprising and legitimate way.

9. Tell people about their innermost fears or insecurities.

10. Predict what is going to happen six weeks from now and why it is important.

11. Be spontaneously alive and exuberant about people and your ideas.

12. Show people courage and do something amazing and brave.

13. Be astonishingly honest and sincere. Achieve authenticity.

14. Be irreverent and make people realize the folly of their beliefs.

15. Tell true dramatic and personal stories. Focus on achievement in the face or adversity. Help people see themselves in the story.

16. Shake people to their roots. Tear apart a sacred cow.

17. Scare people with a prediction. Identify and describe the common enemy or the crisis on the
horizon.

18. Use a really good relevant photograph. Give people visual evidence so they know they are in good company.

19. Do your absolute best and create something truly remarkable and memorable.

20. Create a vivid metaphor that illustrates and relates to your audience at a deep personal level.

21. Create a visual picture that makes people realize what their future will be like.

22. Tell people exactly what they need to do to be healthy, involved, authentic, purposeful, connected to the future, inspired to find greater
meaning and motivated to take immediate action to fulfill their destiny.

It's my belief and experience that these triggers to getting attention and galvanizing people are useful and applicable to all the marketing communications you use to promote your books or products or services.

A galvanizing message will tend to resonate with certain types of people and media. You may have to change your target to match the message. If you find out that one galvanizing idea works for one group or type of people, you may have to find out whether it works as well if you present it to another type of demographic pool of people. A message that works with mature seniors, may or may not work well with fitness, health or women's. A message that works well with techies may not work well with business or education.

ALLBOOKS INTERVIEW
Please state your name and location. (city and State or Province, Country)

My name is Rob Costelloe, and my wife and I live in Cypress, Texas, near Houston.

Tell us the title and publisher of your book:

The book, my second, is Pocket Piece Cameo, published by Saga Books.

Tell us about yourself:

Although I’ve written sporadically all my life, it was only in 2005 that I decided to write professionally. And how that came about makes for a strange story. At the time, I was comfortably determined not to write again, but I did have an interest in love stories in books and film, as well as a restless spirit for wondering what love could achieve in people’s lives. So I’m coasting along, fat-dumb-and-happy with a fulfilling career as an engineering manager (or all things), when I started reading a love story, the best I had come across in years. This story was developing well enough that I was genuinely excited to be reading it. But in the final paragraph, the author had the male protagonist commit suicide and consigned the heroine to an old age of despair. Well, let me tell you: I was so outraged on behalf of all the women who doubtless felt betrayed by the book’s ending that I decided to provide them something better. Within twenty-four hours I was writing my first novel, Coinage of Commitment.

When was the book released?

Cameo was just released in November.

Give us an overview of your book.

Here’s the blurb from the back flap:

Raised in a small Pennsylvania town, Jill and Blake seem the unlikeliest match of all. He is a star athlete, but as an oversized football lineman, he is self-conscious about his weight. She’s a thrill seeking acrobat and gymnast, a tomboy who prefers computers to boys. Allison, on the other hand, seems to have it all: beauty, brains, talent, and ambition, but epileptic seizures scramble her life and her vulnerabilities. All three are upended by a treachery breathtaking in its audacity and shattering in its impact. Can any love withstand a betrayal perfectly fashioned to destroy it? Pocket Piece Cameo is a coming of age story that tests the limits of love’s resilience, of loyalty to a promise, of the distance that love can travel, and the worst that it can recover from.

What inspired you to write this book?

In this case, it was an instance of building a story from the characters. I formulated the four main characters while working on my first novel, Coinage of Commitment. Once that work was complete, I started plotting Pocket Piece Cameo.

How is your book different from other books in this genre?

Both of my titles defy easy genre classification, except that they are contemporary era love stories. I had a Romance publisher offer a contract on Coinage or Commitment (which I didn’t accept), but they made it clear that they were making an exception to their policy of never publishing outside of the Romance genre.

Where can people buy your book?

Amazon.com, SagaBooks.net, and they can get a signed copy from me at rcostelloe.com.

Are you working on another book? If so when do you expect it to be published?

Truth to tell, I’m in the “mulling” stage of characters for the next book.

If you self published, what advice can you give to fellow writers?

If published traditionally, tell us how you benefited:

In today’s market, royalty print published books are more expensive to produce, hence represent a higher hurdle for unpublished writers to surmount in terms of selling a manuscript to a print editor. The benefit is that print books, in my opinion, are easier to promote to the reading public.

Can you share one of your marketing successes with us?

I am unusual among authors in that I always design my own covers. The reason is artistic. I simply want the prospective reader to be able to get a distillation of the reading experience that awaits them by a glance at the cover image. Basis reader feedback, I think this has helped.

How did you find Allbooks Reviews and what are you hoping for in your relationship with us?

I found Allbooks Reviews through a Google search. I like your web platform as a promotional vehicle.

Was the low cost a surprise? What other things would you like Allbooks Reviews to offer writers?

The cost was a pleasant surprise. And I was pleased with the quick service, the attention to detail, as well as the quality of thought that went into my book’s review. I think Allbooks Reviews is off to a good start. I want to see you succeed so that millions of readers peruse your site, looking for good books to buy and enjoy—including mine.
