Writing Book Reviews More Fun than Profit
by Louise Rachlis

A CAA National Capital Region Publication
Workshop, Lecture & Other Info: www.canauthors-ottawa.org

When author, Emily-Jane Hills Orford started writing book reviews — “a great way to make some money, and learn about the market” — she really didn’t like the first book she
was asked to review. That review never ran, but she went on to write many
more reviews that did appear, a three-ring binder full. There are pros and cons to writing book reviews, says Hills Orford who was the April 12th speaker at the monthly
meeting of the Canadian Authors Association–National Capital Region.
“The cons are deadlines and not necessarily being paid,” she says, “but the pros are getting your name out there and promoting anything else you’ve written. In a way it’s free
advertising for what you’ve written, and it’s a way of learning about different styles of writing.”
She says she loves to read anyway, and has kept all her reviews in a three-ring binder.
The books are provided, but these days many of them are electronic books. “If it’s a pre-publication book review, you get a manuscript and possibly your name on the author’s book
cover.” She has written some very positive reviews, and particularly liked Regina’s Closet by Diana Raab and An Ordinary Box of Life by Tim Olney. “You also get some books
that aren’t so good. I always stress that you must be fair; there must be some merit to it if it was actually published. . . . If you’re assigned a book, you have to follow through. You’ve
made a contract.”
Allbooks Review International (www.allbooksreviewint.com) gives reviewers the book and pays a small fee for a review. “As an author, I thought it was a good site to have my books reviewed. It has worked out very well.” Her own book, The Whistling Bishop, was named Finalist in the 2009 Indie Book Awards. Authors pay to be reviewed and provide a copy of their book. Based in southern Ontario, Allbooks Review Int. reviews books from around the world.
One of the funniest books she ever had to review was The Slippery Art of Book Reviewing by Mayra Calvani & Anne K. Edwards, which was also helpful to her. The first step is to read the book, and then follow the publication’s format for writing the review. “Find an eye
catcher for your first sentence. I like to start off with something about the book that captured my attention. You have to have patience and it takes time. Deadline is usually thirty days for
submitting your review.” Local community papers might take reviews, and there
are also specialized journals that might be interested in a book related to their theme.
There are a number of online books review sites, and online bookstores that have book reviews.
“Whatever you write, you’re having your words out there, so you want to be honest to yourself,” she says. “You don’t want to write ‘it was a wonderful book’ if it wasn’t. I get started right away so that if I can’t review it, I can return it and someone else can.”
Also remember not to give away too much information when you’re writing a review, she says. “Your introductory paragraph is not a synopsis. You want to leave readers with a bit of a cliff hanger so they’ll go on and read the book. You want to be fair to the author, but not sugar coat it. Try not to be too academic and on the other side don’t be too pompous and write about all your
great knowledge.”

Allbooks Reviews INTERVIEW:

Allbooks Reviews INTERVIEW:

Please state your name. Dr Simon Kohein

Tell us the title and publisher of your book: The Battle for One Elect
and Tate Publishing

When was the book released? It will be released 24 May 2011

Give us an overview of your book.

The Battle for one Elect is one man’s experience exemplifying the ongoing battle for our souls while personally discussing the fall, the blessing, the prophets, Christ resurrected… the gospel. Although from a large family, as a child Simon effectively lived alone with his younger brother as his grandmother attempts to convince him that it is the evil one’s desire to destroy all families and has severely battered Simon’s. As attacks become more personal and the pain more great, Simon’s need to make his choice between accepting defeat or to maintain unwaveringly reliance on God’s promises becomes mandatory. Neither God nor Satan change. Only Simon is changed as he continues to make choices. This book confirms that while we all suffer in this life, and that while pain positively isolates us, we are not alone.

What inspired you to write this book?

Even before your heart began beating, spiritual forces with longtime momentum were at work. We can and must find God’s promises for our personal circumstance and depend upon their truth above all else. If you’re alive, your spirit is being contested for and you will make the final decision concerning where your eternal life estate will be. A quick search of the scripture generally leads us to Paul’s instruction to the Ephesians concerning the armor provided for this warfare (Eph 6:10-18). How do we stand in this armor and continue believing all God’s provision for us when the events occurring in our lives are quickly and severely victimizing us and our families? How do we stop spiritualizing the equipment provided by God and make it a reality in our physical existence when our circumstance causes us to despair of life itself? What shall we think when the pain and grief are extreme, we are convinced nothing worse can happen, and then…? Can we recover? Can we accept what the recovery must be? This book is to stand in that gap. It is my desire that this book will provide knowledge and comfort while you’re waiting for the morning star to dawn in your heart. Believe me… continue searching… you will find the joy our Lord and Father has provided.

How is your book different from other books in this genre?

The Battle for one Elect intimately shares how spiritual warfare plays out in each of our lives… We are born into this spiritual war and the battle personally and invisibly progresses until suddenly event after event causes enough pain to bring us to our knees. This book systematically demonstrates how the battle is in our minds and is either won or lost by whom we choose to depend upon and the secret thoughts we choose to maintain. Suffering brings us to God and teaches us to know that his written promises are our strength. This book is not simply one more sermon concerning spiritual warfare, it is a model.

Where can people buy your book?

www.SimonKohein.com... and wherever books are sold.

Are you working on another book? If so when do you expect it to be published?

Yes. In a few months…

If published traditionally, tell us how you benefited:

If I decide to self publish in the future, I’ll know whether there are benefits to traditional publishing. Presently, I enjoy the professional feedback prior to publishing.

Can you share one of your marketing successes with us?

The book is not yet released.

How did you find Allbooks Reviews and what are you hoping for in your relationship with us?

Allbooks was referred to me. I am pleased with the opportunity for publicity.

Was the low cost a surprise? What other things would you like Allbooks Reviews to offer writers?

The price is a blessing and I appreciate the work and help with publicity.

Thank you for this interview and best of luck with your book.

SAD

Genre: Inspirational/Self Help
Author: John Mitchell

“NO MORE SAD DEATHS” pg.10
While researching another project the author, John Mitchell repeatedly came across facts regarding the incredibly high number of people, who have passed away too early in their years. What was of interest professionally and personally became his obsession, resulting in an empathetic, matter of fact, educational book. Suicide, Alcohol and Drugs compose the title, SAD. Each one is included in the World Health Organization’s list relating to main causes of death.
Having a prior history of working with the entertainment world, it became his focal point. In no way does he diminish the fact that this problem affects all walks of life, worldwide. How often have we wondered how a favorite performer came to the point of death by drugs, whether intentional or accidental? What more could they possibly want or be so bad that they set their own course to self destruction? They have not only fame, fortune, and exciting life, but the potential to influence the public, more specifically the younger generation.
In a determined attempt to reach others, John has included an eleven page chapter with the alphabetized names of entertainers who have passed on due to one or a combination of these components. Read it; allow the frightening truth of just how many overdosed, accidentally.
Suicide is defined as ‘the intentional killing of oneself.’ In most countries it is considered a crime and a strong stigma prevents many from seeking help. Suicidal thoughts often result from an insufferable amount of stress, trauma and depression. It may only take one last trigger to leap the thought into being an action. It is crucial that a person suffering this badly should not be left alone, uncared for.
Addiction indicates that a person has become dependent on a chemical substance. The condition itself can be related to many other aspects in our lives, food and gambling for example. It is a loss of control, an irrefutable need which has its victim willing to do anything possible, regardless of the consequences, to obtain what is craved. The addict must acknowledge that there is an unhealthy problem as the first step to taking back control and must want to quit.
Drugs are addressed, most specifically Heroin. A drug that was once related to poverty and hopelessness has now made its way into all ages, and classes of lifestyle. It is appallingly available at school, including junior schools! Believe this chapter, it is reality.
John Mitchell has other publications about behavioral health and has written valuable, unforgettable information in this book. He has included chapters on Depression, Fear, Stress as well as the significance of Positive Thinking and Religion. In a confident, straight forward manner he educates his readers on the benefits of Health and Wellness.
It is only natural for parents to worry about their children as they grow up, deciding to explore all possibilities available in life. John shares with us his personal devastation when his twenty-year-old daughter went away with her friends, only to be found dead from an overdose of heroin. The coroner concluded that it was her first time. Sharing his personal heartbreak enforces this author’s beliefs and knowledge. Join in to spread the word, SAY NO TO DRUGS!
This is a highly recommended read. Reviewer: Cheryl Heinrichs, Allbooks Review @ www.allbooksreviewint.com

The Tree Singer

Genre: Fiction, Fantasy
Author: Danny Fahey

“How we act. The choices we make. The loyalties we keep.” Pg317

In this fantasy of faith, healing, love, loss and betrayal, a young man dreams his future. Jacob is destined to leave his destitute fishing village to become a prosperous, if not famous flute maker.
His Mother, Juliana had been well known for her sharp tongue but since her husband’s death she had become a bitter, angry woman. She had even accused Jacob of having something to do with his father’s death. Life would never be the same as he remembered it.
The town’s fishing industry was dormant, trying to farm the boulder laden land proved futile. The sickness that had spread through the town left the villagers sapped of life and hope.
There was little laughter now as they merely eked out an existence.
Simon, the ‘Healer’ strolled leisurely into their lives. His origin or future was unknown. For now he had been sent to the village with his powerful healing hands and teaching skills.
Juliana and Jacob welcomed him into their home where he begins his healing. Over the course of time the village prospers, becoming alive again with the salt lake full of fish and the land bearing food. Miracles seemed to happen every day with Simon around.
Simon nurtures Jacob’s dream of becoming a flute maker, teaching him worldly as well as magical skills such as learning to ‘sing wood from trees.’ Harrod, the carpenter patiently teaches Jacob how to carve, drill and care for the wood as he makes his first flutes. His daughter, Maddie’s tortured mind has been released by Simon, and the bond between Jacob and Maddie grows into love. The outside world becomes aware of the location of the ‘Healer’ and Jacob sees the toll that healing is having on Simon.
Years pass before the day when Simon announces he must be on his way. “Life moves forward, always forward.” Pg.225
At twenty-three Jacob and Maddie decide he should go to the city called Cathel before they marry. He hopes to see Simon again and has an appointment to show a famous musician his talent for flute making. Amazing experiences come to Jacob, and he becomes well known for the lost art of ‘tree singing.’
This story is well laid out, easy to follow and an enjoyable read. The author, Danny Fahey magically has the reader feeling the intense emotions throughout the novel.

Redeem The Knight

Genre: Fantasy
Author: David V. Mammina

Prepare yourself for a pulsating spin on life after Armageddon as in this story the world had come to an end as people knew it. The causes were unending, futile wars, incurable malignances, burning boulders from meteors and lethal power stations spewing toxins that spread through the air, tainting food, water and land.
Some of the strongest people survived beginning new civilizations on limited habitable land. Using the basic instinct of survival they returned to primal ways of living.
God created paladins, ‘a holy officer’, with mystical powers of healing mortal wounds. A pure unadulterated paladin was blessed with a Divine Mace to assist in the battle against heretics
and the evil actions of the Blood Reapers. One of the New World’s beliefs was that those who spoke Christian were sorcerers.
Arl Baelin, once a highly regarded paladin, is found guilty of natural sin, revenge. He had married a sorcerer, Gideon and they produced a baby boy. With heart wrenching horror he had witnessed the Blood Reapers savagely violate his wife and with unbelievable brutality, killed the infant boy. Armed with the instinct of battle and his Divine Mace he tracked down, tortured and killed those he believed responsible. His actions are judged dishonorable by the Magistrates and he is banished to Islandia, where he and his dog and faithful companion lived off the land.
Three years pass before he is summoned to a duty assigned by the Magistrates. Using his unique skill to heal mortal wounds, his Divine Mace and resistance to most black magic he is ordered to rid the town called Chimera, of the Midvein Mansion. The mansion, which had been in ruins since before the Primeval Tragedy is believed to be haunted and responsible for missing town people. Arl believes he has been given a chance for redemption and willingly faces probable death for his cause. His courageous battle against unbelievable odds is a frightening tale. The battle between good and evil is tested to the limit. Fierce brutality is detailed in the war against the Blood Reapers and the chilling apparitions of the mansion, bringing the reader to a stunning end when the true nature of the mission is revealed.
The author, David V. Mammina started writing after high school, publishing his first of five books in his early years of college. He currently works as a social studies teacher and enjoys
Dark Fantasy novels as an escape for his sincere persona.
The novel is a prequel to his ‘Angels of Resistance’ but as he states and I must agree, this reading experience stands on its own. A Highly Recommended read!

Forged in the Jungles of Burma

Genre: Fiction
Author: D.C. Shaftoe

How is it possible for one person to survive so much pain and horror in one life? Caroline has already faced great loss after her husband and children are killed in an accident. While taking time to renew herself and help others, she innocently becomes involved in a political incident and finds herself in prison. This Burmese prison is horror personified, but her faith in God helps her face the challenge and she is actually able to help others in prison with her. Then John, a spy with much important information to hide, is thrown into her cell and her life changes again. This irascible man, liar by profession, is tortured nearly to the point of death, but Caroline is bound by her faith, to help him, even when her own life is made more difficult because of her aid. John does not want her help, will not trust her in any way, and either lies or is silent much of the time that he is forced to live in the same cell. She persists and a prickly relationship develops. Their new bond, his developing faith and her undying spirit help them through many torturous miles of jungle after their escape. They are pursued, attacked and face nature’s wrath, but God is constantly with them.
D.C. Shaftoe has written a compelling spy story and romance. She has experienced the oppression of people of different cultures and several incidences in her book relate to those experiences, as John and Caroline travel and meet those who either help them or hinder them. This is an excellent novel and I look forward to more from this author. Highly Recommended Reviewer: Elaine Fuhr, www.allbooksreviewint.com

Nexus

Genre: Mystery/Science Fiction
Title: Nexus
Author: N.E. Walker

Joe Nichols lives a quiet, unassuming life with his wife, Alice, and his daughter, Melissa. Their house will never grace the cover of Better Homes and Gardens, and their furniture is old and worn out, but it is a happy home. Their daily routine is quite predictable, in fact, until old dreams and obsessions, banished to the recesses of Joe’s mind years ago, are abruptly awakened as he sits in a theatre watching a new blockbuster children’s movie with Melissa. Scene by scene, he realizes that the story is identical to a book he wrote years earlier when he dreamed of becoming a published author. Barely controlled anger seethes inside him as he watches someone else’s name roll by in the credits, but what can he do? After years ago being forced to choose between Alice and his writing, will his marriage survive if he dredges up the old obsessions once again, and to what lengths will he go to expose the thief and get the fame he deserves? This is the starting point of Nexus, a nail biter of a mystery which ends with a distinct sci-fi twist.
From the opening paragraph, I was intrigued and found myself unable to put this book down. As I greedily turned the pages, my anticipation and curiosity rose to higher and higher levels, and I found myself formulating different theories, trying to put the puzzle pieces in place to solve the mystery. Each time, though, a new twist in the plot would crush my theory, leaving me totally perplexed as the story moved closer to the shocking climax and conclusion.
N. E. Walker is a magician with words, spellbinding the reader with imagery that makes the story so visual and real. His use of similes and metaphors is exceptional without being overdone. I could feel Joe’s anger and frustration growing with every turn of the page, and I could picture the scenes vividly.
As often is the case with sci-fi, I found myself dazed and awed by the ending, not quite sure if I totally understood the outcome or not. I don’t mean that in a negative way though. Sci-fi challenges the mind to consider possibilities outside the range of what we consider normal, and Nexus did just that. It left me pondering our very existence in the universe. This book held me in its grip from start to finish, and I highly recommend it. In fact, I can’t wait to read more by Walker!

Review: Flashes and Specks

Genre: Fiction
Title: Flashes and Specks
Author: Mark Pogodzinski

Complex! Unusual! Original! Maybe even lunatic!

This novel makes one suspend belief. It also holds the reader hostage: emotionally, psychologically and philosophically. Phew!

* Emotionally, because it’s an emotional roller-coaster ride. It gives a sense of normalcy, and yet at every corner, a dark and sad side makes you despair.
* Psychologically, because I am captivated by the author’s exploration of the psyche of his characters. They are ordinary people like you and me, going about the normal business of living, but in an out-of-control world.
* Philosophically, because at the end of each episode (not chapter), I have to stop to take a deep breath, and ponder over the many faceted expositions of the characters personal and relational issues. Not only that, but it is juxtaposed with world issues, including the end of the world! At the end of each episode, I ask myself, “Now what? What flashes or specks of a super hero’s life will I encounter next?”

The main character is Henry Kent, a grade 8 math teacher, who finds himself a confidante to his colleagues and students, who are filled with either raging or insane issues. His mentor has calculated the date for the end of the world and writes the formulas on his body. His wife disappears, re-appears and disappears again. (You have to read the book to find out if she will re-appear). He is father to a son who spends all his free time in their basement, building and moving his characters around a city, he builds using milk cartons and photographs he has taken from his daily life. No wonder Henry craves to be a comic book super hero to enable him to maintain control of his chaotic life!

The author, Mark Pogodzinski, is a high school teacher in Buffalo, New York. He has written comic books since he was eight and has had numerous short stories published. He has also won several writing awards. In this book he successfully weaves a fascinating tale and this is only his first published novel! Look out for more of his books; he is writing more!

This book is an excellent read for those who have the time to be intrigued or want to take the time to think and ask questions. It’s for people who want to weigh every word, incident and to question every issue in this book. This novel will satisfy their thirst for questions and answers, and make them want to ponder even more!
