INTERNAL MARKERS

FROM FUNDAMENTALS OF FICTION WRITING--Valerie Parv,

Every story is about conflict, such as whether or not a father can reconcile with his estranged son. Each character may have an external marker that identifies the essence of his attitude: The father may be an ex-military man who every morning makes his bed so precisely that he literally bounces a quarter off it. If the quarter doesn't bounce high enough, he may pull the bed apart and start over. This indicates that he's a rigid man who needs discipline, almost compulsively so. The son takes photos as a hobby, but all the people in them are photographed so that their heads are cut off. This indicates he feels removed from people as individuals, probably as a result of his father's emotional distance. Now, combine these external markers with the internal markers and you have a fully developed character who the reader cares deeply about.

Internal markers are about desire: What does the character want? Why does she or he want it? This is revealed in the characters' emotional reactions to events and other characters in the story, their motivation for their actions in the story, and their biases or opinions about the world at large. In the above case, the internal markers are how badly each wants to reconcile, why they do or don't want to reconcile, and what they're willing to do to cause or prevent the reconciliation.

Sometimes this internal landscape of a character is presented in a dialogue, in which the character tells us what he wants and why. Or we may get that info in a flashback, during whichwe see certain events and the emotional impact they had on the character.

Another method of providing internal markers is through the character's opinions about various subjects. These opinions could be related to the events of the story, or they may not. She may be giving opinions about movies, books, or music. Or pontificating on politics or religion. It is through the pattern of these opinions that the reader comes to know what they are feeling--and who they really are.

ALLBOOKS REVIEW INTERVIEW

Please state your name and location. (city and State or Province, Country)

Michelle Cadeau, West Orange NJ USA

Tell us the title and publisher of your book:
My unique family
Divas publishing

Tell us about yourself:
I am a Mom of two great boys age 7 and 4. I have always dreamed of writing and wrote my first book (never published though) when I was 12. I grew up in Sweden and moved to the US 1994. I live a typical suburb life right outside of Manhattan and love it here.

When was the book released?

July 2008

Give us an overview of your book.

JayJay and Totte are two Swedish-Haitian-American brothers who live right outside of New York City together with their Swedish mom and Haitian dad. They speak English, Swedish and Kreyol. Their skin is just that perfect suntanned color all year around and they have nice curly hair and brown eyes.

In the book 'My unique family!' Jay Jay feels like people are staring at him, especially when he speaks Swedish with his mom. One day he asks his mom why people are staring at him. Why he is different.

What do you think his mom answers?

In 'My unique family' you will follow the interesting question and see how Jay Jay's mom answers the question. Through her answer you will meet 18 other mixed families from around the world. You will learn facts about their countries, learn to say the sentences 'My name is ... What is your name?' in over 100 languages.

What inspired you to write this book?

I wanted to make a difference in the lives of children. This book does that. It boosts the self-esteem of mixed kids and held mono-cultural kids understand the greatness in their mixed friends.

How is your book different from other books in this genre?

It is inspiring in a way that no other book is. It nails the issues of a mixed child and makes those issues an asset. It is a great educational tool for families and schools.

Where can people buy your book?
At Amazon.com or at www.jayjayandtotte.com

Are you working on another book? If so when do you expect it to be published?
Yes I do. I am right now working on getting ‘My unique family’ translated to Spanish (it is already published in Swedish) and then my next book in the Jay Jay and Totte series will be put on paper. It is called ‘What are you anyway?’

If you self published, what advice can you give to fellow writers?

I am self published in the US. Educate yourself and understand that it is a lot of work to become successful. Network, network, network

If published traditionally, tell us how you benefited:
My books in Sweden are traditionally published. I must say that I like self publishing better. You are in charge, have more control and make more money.

Can you share one of your marketing successes with us?

I have worked hard to market this book in the US. I started by getting in contact with local books and toy stores. I offered story hours, work shops and book signings. I was sure about the greatness of my book and I believe in my book. My husband had to start taking days of from work so I could fulfill all the events I had scheduled. It is going great and I get big orders coming in on the book.

How did you find Allbooks Reviews and what are you hoping for in your relationship with us?
It was great to get professional reviews from you and I hope to work with you on my next books as well.

Was the low cost a surprise? What other things would you like Allbooks Reviews to offer writers?
It was low ;-) I am not sure what else you could offer. It is a great service.

Thank you for this interview and best of luck with your book.

Lulu.com Purchases Tainted Poetry.com
-------------------------------------
The infamous Poetry.com, home to the "International Library of Poetry," exists no more. Instead, Lulu.com has bought the domain name and is turning it into a poetry-only version of Lulu.com.

Lulu's idea is that the site will be a place where poets can connect with other poets and have feedback on their work. The site also offers no-fee poetry contests with daily ($25), weekly ($250) and yearly ($5000) prizes. One of the downsides of the new site is that all the work that poets had paid to display on poetry.com has disappeared. For more on this story visit: http://tinyurl.com/dk9h2g

Authors Bring Forward Publication Dates to Beat Dan Brown
---------------------------------------------------------
September in the UK is not normally a time for a huge number of book releases. It is, in fact, a relatively quiet period. But not this year! This year most of the major book releases that would normally take please near Christmas are all happening in the first few weeks of September. The reason: the authors and their publishers want a chance at hitting the No.1 Bestseller spot and they know that they won't do this if they wait to launch their books until after September 15th, when Dan Brown's sequel to the Da Vinci Code is published. FEATURE

WHY NEWS RELEASES FAIL by Paul J. Krupin
The issues listed here have all been identified as reasons for the failure of a news release. This is based on over 20 years of experience in dealing with the aftermath ¬- the actual number and quality of responses generated from the transmittal of a news release

So here are the most common reasons why news releases fail:

1. You wrote an advertisement. It’s not a news release at all. It sells product. It fails to offer solid news of real tangible interest, value-added information, education or entertainment.

2. You wrote for a minority, not for a majority of people in the audience. You simply won’t compete with other news releases that clearly are written for a larger demographic of the media audience.

3. You are the center of attention, not the media audience. You focus on your business and your marketing, instead of things the editor and his or her audience will be interested in.

4. You forgot to put the five W’s up front. (WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN and WHY THE AUDIENCE WILL BE INTERESTED). You didn’t clearly and succinctly tell the media why the audience would be interested in this.

5. You are too wordy and text dense. You focused on details and minutia, instead of the most important ideas, issues, factors, facts, and news angles. You fail to address the real significant impacts your story has on people.

6. You place too much information on one page. The one page news release has a font size so small an editor needs a magnifying glass to read it.

7. You included corporate logos and other non-persuasive low value added graphics that distract the editor from your key message. You may have also used an unusual fancy font or a file format that turns to gobbledygook when it goes through a fax machine.

8. You wrote a personally biased article for the media to publish, instead of pitching the idea to the media and the objective reasons why the media audience will be interested.

9. You wrote about features and facts, and forgot to explain what it means to real people. Tell a story about real people. Add in real life human interest.

10. You wrote about how your news ties in to someone else’s fame and glory. Forget it. Never stand in the shadow of someone else. Make your own light. Tell your own story.

11. Your news release responds to something that just happened. You’re too late. You’re behind the eight ball. Forget it. Get out in front of the news.

12. You included too much hype, self-laudatory praise, pithy quotes, useless testimonials, jargon or gobbledygook. Get rid of it.

13. You may have also identified prior media coverage, which indicates it’s no longer a new issue. Get rid of it. Let each news release stand on it’s own two feet.

14. You tried to impress and be clever or innovative but you come off naïve, less than expert, biased, flippant, arrogant, or crazy. Tone it down. Get straight.

15. You made vague and unsubstantiated claims, or wild and outrageous claims, or you included a statement that simply rubs the media the wrong way. Get rid of them.

16. You are trying to be different, just for the sake of it, but you come off eccentric. Forget it. Don’t create a false or inflated image. Be yourself.

17. You wrote a rant and rave worthy of a letter to the editor, instead of a problem solving tips article, worthy of a feature story. Decide what you want, put your best effort into it.

18. You are simply not credible. It could be your ideas are simply not well thought out, or that you’ve offered old well-worn material, or that you are too extreme or controversial, or not qualified. You may not be expert enough, or sufficiently qualified, to make the statements, compared to others in your field. You need to present information that qualifies you properly and adequately.

19. You provided poor contact information. You need to identify the best single point of contact and the correct phone number so interested media can reach you and get the best possible attention and response from you to meet their needs. One key person, one phone, no fax, one email address, and one URL (with no long string addresses).

20. You did not include a clear media call for action. You didn’t tell the media what you want them to do with your news release. You need to tell them what you are asking for or suggesting or offering. Then you need to offer the media incentives value-added reasons to do so, like free review copies, free test samples, interview questions and answers, media kits with story angles and stats and data, relevant photographs, etc.

21. You did not incorporate and integrate a primary response mechanism. You need to include a value-added reason, which motivates the editor to publish or mention your contact information, which will generate calls, traffic, interviews, or requests for more information. This usually means something unique and of special value to the audience, that the editor feels good about mentioning. Use an offer for a free problem solving report.

22. You sent the release to the wrong media. Target the media that your clients read, watch and listen to when they are in the right mood, that is, receptive to hearing about your news, and willing to take action when they get your message. Work with your publicist to target the right media.

23. You rely on a single fax or an email to produce an avalanche of media calls. You conduct no follow up. Get real. Follow up properly and you can triple or quadruple your media response rate. Better still, you can ask the editors “what can I give you to support a feature story and meet your needs.”

Finally, the biggest reason for news release failure is one of attitude. How do you define success or failure? It’s called unrealistic expectations.

So when you write a news release please review it against these criteria to see if you’ve made any of these errors. Then fix each and every one of them yourself.

Listen to your publicist. Heed these warnings and reduce the risks of failure. Fail to pay attention to these issues, and proceed at your own risk.

ALLBOOKS INTERVIEW

Please state your name and location. (city and State or Province, Country)

David L Carlson
1212 Willow Tree Lane
Seminole, OK 74868

Tell us the title and publisher of your book:
“I Can’t Believe I Did That!” published by Xlibris Corp

Tell us about yourself:
For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in the world of science and scientific discovery. After getting established in a career in aviation, I went back to college at age 31 and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California at Davis, CA. I became a government employee and have spent most of my career as an instructor at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City where I developed and revised courses and manuals used in teaching weather and other aviation-related fields. Since retiring, my wife, Mary Jo, and I have moved to a smaller town to be near family and enjoy a slower pace of life.

When was the book released?
January, 2008

Give us an overview of your book.

The book explains the origins of what we refer to as “Human Nature.” Despite the tremendous variation in human behavior, there are several distinct traits that are common to our species and all other species as well. These include dominance and submission, aggression, territoriality, altruism, loyalty to family and group, mistrust of strangers and sex drive along with all of our automatic bodily functions such as heartbeat and respiration. We refer to all these functions together as the “Instinct of Survival” and they originate in a small and very ancient part of our brain often called the “Primitive Brain Stem.”

My purpose in the book is to show that there are normal and natural reasons for what are often illogical, unreasonable and destructive emotions that result in war, hatred, violence, bigotry and other negative behaviors. The alternatives of peace, cooperation, reason and tolerance are simply decisions we can all make.

What inspired you to write this book?

As a young man, I was quite domineering and controlling with my family even though I disliked seeing that type of behavior in others. When I finally recognized it in myself, I was determined to change, even though it was difficult to do. I also began a serious program of research and observation to explain this and other facets of “Human Nature.” It finally all made sense and, when I retired, I felt that I could sum it all up in a book.

How is your book different from other books in this genre?
Other books that I have read describe instinctive behavior in all species except humans.

Where can people buy your book?
It is available on amazon.com, borders.com, bn.com as well as xlibris.com

Are you working on another book? If so when do you expect it to be published?
I have some ideas and some notes but that’s all so far.

If you self published, what advice can you give to fellow writers?
For most unknown authors, it is probably the only way to get your book in print.

If published traditionally, tell us how you benefited:

Can you share one of your marketing successes with us?
So far, book signings at Hasting Bookstores have resulted in the most sales.

How did you find Allbooks Reviews and what are you hoping for in your relationship with us?
My stepdaughter, Lori Davis, who is also publishing a book, told me about Allbooks. I’m hoping for widespread promotion of her book and mine.

Was the low cost a surprise? What other things would you like Allbooks Reviews to offer writers?
I was pleasantly surprised at the variety and low cost of the services provided by Allbooks Reviews. I don’t know what else they could offer except possibly a personal recommendation from Oprah!

Thank you for this interview and best of luck with your book.

FEATURE

This happens so often at Allbooks Review, I had to print this article by my friend and fellow editor, Carolyn Howard Johnson.

Dear Publisher/author:

I received a copy of a book XX yesterday. Lovely cover. Good title. But no note, no review copy label. No business card. No cover letter. Nothing. What to do with it? Endorsement? Review? A mention in my newsletter (is the author a subscriber)? There wasn’t even an e - mail or Web site address for the author. That means I have to research my mail before I begin to schedule my week’s work.

Sorry to be grumpy, but this is one of the reasons that reviewers get a bad name and why authors get called “snooty” because we don’t answer our mail. We (authors, editors, freelance writers) often wear many hats - - and we also have very short memories!

I'm only mentioning this so that you might fix your system. Perhaps you could include a little postcard in your mailings? It could include author contact information and/or mentions the purpose for which it is being sent. Don’t leave us without essential information.

Your job as your own publicist (even if you have hired one) is to make things as easy as possible on your readers, editors, agents and others. Give them what they need to work quickly. They will be indebted. If you don't, they may drop you . . . or at least not ask come back for more mistreatment.

I realize that, as authors, we often don’t have control over what our publisher or the press that may send out our copies, so that leads me to another tip:

I remember agent Michael Larsen mentioning this at one of the first writer’s conferences I attended. He said, "Follow up!" If, a couple of days after I received something in the mail I didn’t know what to do with, it would be a help if the author asked if I got the review copy (or whatever it was!), not a hindrance.

We authors are in business, after all. And good business communication is essential for good business! We hear all the time that agents and publishers and editors don’t like to be hounded. Well, no. They don’t. But they do like to be helped.

By the way, I didn't mention plain old manners in the letter I sent. (I guess I wasn't in such a bad mood after all!) I mean, what would it have hurt to include a thank you?

Happy Writing, Promoting and Editing, too!
Carolyn Howard – Johnson, author of The Frugal Book Promoter

ALLBOOKS INTERVIEW

Please state your name and location. (city and State or Province, Country)

I am Barry Eva, though I write under the name of “Storyheart”

I currently live in Seymour, CT, USA moving from England

Tell us the title and publisher of your book:

Book is called “Across the Pond” and is published by Xlibris

Tell us about yourself:

Born in Barnet, Hertfordshire, Barry, also known as “Storyheart”, left his beloved England in 2000, moving to the USA to be with the woman he'd met and fallen in love with on the Internet.

Better known for his short romance stories on the net and in his book “Stories from the Heart”. Barry is popular for narrating his stories on local TV, running his own blog chat radio show or as a guest on other media stations, where his whit, oratory, and old-fashioned English charm make him a popular interviewee.

When was the book released?

October 2008

Give us an overview of your book.

Finding himself packed off to friends in the USA, fifteen-year-old English born Fred Squire is not happy. Then he meets Brittany.

Struggling with his feelings for Brit and the language, Fred is further confused when he meets Brit's flirtatious friend, Angel.

Escaping from a confrontation with Steve Harris, the neighborhood bully, Brit tells Fred her dark secret about Harris, and Fred's world is turned upside down.

Life continues to throw Fred a curve ball when he catches a baseball worth a small fortune. Further run-ins with Harris, a crazy family BBQ, and a chase through a mall all add to Fred's American adventure.

Brit and her Brit", know that their young love will be followed by heartache when Fred has to return to England. But not before some final twists in the tale.

Across the Pond is an enjoyable 117 pages that goes from through all aspects of young love. With believable characters, exciting events, humor, first love, education and a little sport thrown in for good measure. Across the Pond is a book for all ages, from the young to the young at heart.

What inspired you to write this book?

They say write about what you know and myself moving across the pond, I know many of the issues that me hero comes up against.

How is your book different from other books in this genre?

It is being enjoyed by all ages, rather than just young adults. With over sixty reviews on Amazon alone since it came out last October. The reviews are from people from ten to eighty. That is why I now say “for the young and young at heart”. So many people have picked up and enjoyed different aspects of the book, the humor, characters, the language differences and so much more.

Where can people buy your book?

It is available on all internet book sites from Amazon, Barnes and Noble down to Target.

Are you working on another book? If so when do you expect it to be published?

Yes many people have mentioned the fact there are one of two threads that can be made into another novel, which I have now started it. It will be called “Across the Pond and Back Again” and carries on from where the first book ends. I hope to complete it this year.

If you self published, what advice can you give to fellow writers?

Look around see what other people are saying, before taking the step. There is so much out there and so many people who will be only to glad to help. Set up what you can before the book is launched, web page, face book etc the internet is the way to go. Many offerings are out there for little money compared to what publishers might offer as an extra. No matter what you have make the effort, it will not all come to you on a plate.

Be proud of what you the writer produce

Can you share one of your marketing successes with us?

Where do I start…?

Virtual Book Tours I think, traveling and appearing around the world without leaving your desk, something I was able to do even while recovering from back surgery. It was so much fun appearing on different locations every day and meeting such fun people. Some publishing houses etc charge an arm and a leg for such stuff. I would without any hesitation recommend the people I used for my tour with. The wonderful group of ladies at "pumpupyourbookpromotion.com”

The cost is a fraction of what many charge, and along with the fun, managed to get myself and my book into many places around the world.

This was a big step along the marketing road.

How did you find Allbooks Reviews and what are you hoping for in your relationship with us?

It was recommended to me by other authors, writers groups and friends, it is another step along the marketing road.

Was the low cost a surprise? What other things would you like Allbooks Reviews to offer writers?

The cost and the service offered were very reasonable. The service was as good as I had heard and expected. And I’m sure will be using some other offerings from Allbooks

Thank you for this interview and best of luck with your book.

Thank you for having me as a guest

Proud American Artist/Author in joint venture with Ottawa, Canada Students

How did American Geno Peoples, author of Ax Seeker of Justice come to be associated with gifted students from the ABC Ottawa Take-off program? Allbooks Review, managing editor and founder, Shirley A. Roe met Peoples during a book- signing event in Panama City, Florida. As an author promotion and book review source, Allbooks Review works with authors from all over the world. Ms. Roe and one of her regular reviewers, Emily Jane Hills Orford were working on a contest for the ABC Ottawa Take-off program. Roe thought that Ax, Seeker of Justice would be an excellent reading choice for these students.

Mr. Peoples agreed to supply the group with copies of his book, which the students read and reviewed. Students also read and reviewed A Call to Faith and Freedom, a historical fiction by Shirley A. Roe. A prize of $50 is being offered to the students producing the best reviews, as well as an opportunity to become one of the Allbooks Review regular reviewers.

ABC Ottawa Take-off program is designed to offer an opportunity for bright, gifted children, who have a particularly strong interest in a certain topic or subject. Emily Jane Hills Orford, a Canadian author created and crafted a course, Beyond the Ordinary. This book brought together eight remarkable youngsters who created a fascinating collection of stories. Ms. Orford is now working with students on a book-reviewing course. Allbooks Review was happy to sponsor the contest.

Geno Peoples, himself a gifted artist and author, is anxious to promote his first book. Mr. Peoples said: “Since the 911 disasters, I have felt a deep sense of pain for the families and the ones who lost their lives on that tragic day. After experiencing a dream of an innocent and pure, superhero filled with American pride, I began to paint my hero. My passion overflowed to the point where I began writing the book. With God on my side and plenty of determination, I went forward and never looked back. My greatest hope is that after people read my book, they will find peace and comfort in their hearts.

I am pleased to work with such enthusiastic and gifted youngsters.

The subject of the book is best described by one of the reviewers, here is an excerpt : Pursuing his lifelong dream as a firefighter in New York, young John Axle knows he can’t save everyone; but he is content to do what he can. Yet when he gets trapped under the rubble after the collapse of the Twin Towers in the 9/11 tragedy, he is forced to watch helplessly as 343 of his fellow firefighters die, including his best friend, Nick. So, when he emerges from the wreckage, reborn, wielding inhuman powers, he vows to see justice be served to the terrorists who killed his friends. He has become Ax, Seeker of Justice. AX Seeker of Justice will bring tears to your eyes long after you have read its final word of power. Boyu Huang, Ottawa Ontario.

Allbooks Review is proud and happy to bring citizens of our two countries together in such a worthwhile project. Reviews will be posted on the website and the winners will be announced in June. Shirley Roe would like to thank Geno Peoples, Emily Hills Orford and the students for making this project such a huge success. Visit the website: www.allbookreviews.com for more information. An Interview with Shirley A. Roe - AllBooks Review

CB: You are an author, writer, editor, and reviewer with a remarkable portfolio. I’d like to begin this interview with a little background information first. Briefly tell us a little bit about Shirley Roe, the person: where did you grow up, siblings, family, etc.

SR: Thank you Cindy. I was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and lived in southern Ontario during my childhood, with my parents and two brothers. My husband, Jim and I still live in a suburb of Toronto. We have three children and 6 grandchildren. Jim and I spend half the year in Florida and travel to Scotland at least once a year. We love to travel and I am always researching for a new story.

CB: Your first novel, Of Dreams and Nightmares, was published by PublishAmerica. As a former PA author, can you tell us a little about your experience in working with that company and any advice you might have for other authors still trying to get that first manuscript published. How has that worked out for you?

SR: Unfortunately my experience with PA was not to my satisfaction and I cancelled my contract after 4 years. The seven year contract was restrictive and costly to get out of. The company does not promote their authors and the cost of buying books at the author’s price is very high. My second and third books were published by independent publishers and I am currently working with RealTime Publishing, whom I am very impressed with.

CB: You are the Managing Editor of award winning AllBooks Review. How did the review site come about and what services do you offer, other than book reviews?

SR: In 2000, as an author myself, I saw a great need for reviewers for POD books. I started Allbooks Review for this reason and the company has grown dramatically in the past 9 years. AllBooks Review now reviews POD, eBook and traditional books from authors all over the globe. We offer advertising, promotion, editing, synopsis writing and guest speaker engagements. The Allbooks Review blog site is now a stop for Virtual Book tours. Our newsletter is read and appreciated by thousands of readers. Allbooks now has 27 excellent reviewers, from all walks of life.

CB: Your reviews are furnished to libraries by a Book Review Index, which is a CD. Can you briefly describe this idea’s origination and do you find it helps in getting authors’ books into the libraries nationally?

SR: The CD idea originated with Midwest Reviews who I work with. James Cox, founder of Midwest, would be happy to answer this question.

CB: Briefly describe your published works:

SR: I have three historical fictions published. Of Dreams and Nightmares is the story of Martha Whittaker, an English woman who travels to America and becomes a pioneer in the wilds of Wyoming Territory. Her story describes the trials and tribulations faced by these brave and formidable people. The Whittaker Family Reunion picks up Martha’s family twenty years later in St. Louis. The family is reuniting; however a mysterious stranger arrives, threatening both their safety and their sanity. A Call to Faith and Freedom is the story of the invasion of the Scottish Highlands in the 6th Century. It is a romance, adventure and historically accurate tale of the life of the Celts and Druids.

CB: Where might we buy them and do you offer signed copies?

SR: Signed copies can be purchased directly from me through my website:

allbookreviews.com or booksbyshirleyroe.bravehost.com. Books are sold on Amazon.com, realtimepublishings.com, Borders, Barnes and Noble, Books-A-Million and most bookstores.

CB: On each published work, how did you come by the ideas for the story plots and does your family influence your writings in any way?

SR: I am a historical fiction fan. The idea for A Call to Faith and Freedom stems from my many visits to Scotland and all of the historical sites there. Martha Whittaker was a character that I invented during a writing class. She haunted me and I was compelled to write her story.

CB: You recently joined forces with TheEBookSale.com and RealTime Publishing, which is owned and managed by Richie O’Brien. Can you briefly tell us about this partnership and what it means to aspiring authors hoping to be published?

SR: I am very pleased to be associated with Mr. O’Brien and RealTime Publishing. I personally published The Whittaker Family Reunion with RealTime in both eBook and printed format. The service was very reasonable and Mr. O’Brien’s personal touch is a much-appreciated asset. As an author, I found publishers are often unavailable and uncooperative; this is not the case with RealTime. AllBooks Review provides the acquisition service and editing service to RealTime and I would highly recommend this company to both new and previously published authors. The rate for set up is one of the most reasonable on the web today and the end product is high quality. The eBookSale works hard to promote their books on many sites and distribution outlets.

CB: You write in several genres. Is there one in particular you enjoy more than the others?

SR: My favorite is definitely historical fiction.

CB: I see that you and your husband like to travel to research information for your works. Do you have the story idea in your head and then travel to get the information needed, or do you travel and come up with your ideas then?

SR: A little of both, A Call to Faith and Freedom definitely came to me during a trip to Scotland. I am currently working on a novel based in southern Alaska and I am planning a trip there this summer.

CB: Briefly tell us a little about your affiliations:

SR: As mentioned I am affiliated with RealTime Publishing. I promote Brenda Novak’s auction for Diabetes every year. I have been a judge for Tweener Ministries Young Writers contests. I work with the ABC Ottawa Take Off Program and Emily Jane Hills Orford. This program offers bright, gifted children a chance to connect with talented, skilled adults eager to share their interests and passions for a particular subject.

AllBooks Review signed the Business Ethics Pledge with businessethicspledge.org. I am a member of Shadow Forest Writers, Author’s Guild, Books and Authors, and several other writing groups. I write a syndicated column for American Chronicles. Personally, as a member of World Wildlife Federation, I support many environmental sites and sources.

CB: AllBooks Review has been twice awarded 101 Best Websites For Writers by Writer’s Digest. That’s quite an accomplishment! Can you tell us a little about the staff behind the site and their contributions leading up to such a prestigious award?

SR: My reviewers and staff are the best. Over the years we have grown to offer more services and review many different genres and formats. AllBooks Review prides itself on conscientious service. Lisa Haselton is one of the best editors in the business. I am thrilled to have her on staff. Bob Medak is an excellent marketing manager. He manages our blogs, Twitter, WordPress, Facebook, etc. with ease. Email inquiries are answered quickly, reviews are completed in 30 days, ads are prepared and posted in a reasonable time and service is what we are about. We are here to serve and it is our pleasure. Allbooks Review has received thousands of testimonials over the years and we thank every one of our authors for their kind words. Readers will find AllBooks Reviews on several book jackets and in author promotional materials.

CB: AllBooks Review is also international. Who can submit to your site for a review and what information should they know prior to submission?

SR: All authors worldwide can submit. Our reviews are in English. Submission guidelines are available by emailing through the site or directly: allbookreviews@aol.com. We do not accept unsolicited works; please contact us before sending your book.

CB: What project are you working on now?

SR: I am currently finishing the final book in the Martha Whittaker series, Return to Whittakerville. It will be published in summer 2009 by RealTime Publishing, in both eBook and printed format. Once that is complete, I have two other historical fiction novels to complete. One based on the Tlingit tribe of Northern British Columbia/Alaska and the other is set in Ireland in the 1700’s.

CB: Do you write any series of books and if not, have you ever considered doing a series?

SR: Yes, the Martha Whittaker Story is a series: Of Dreams and Nightmares, The Whittaker Family Reunion and finally Return to Whittakerville.

CB: You are an editor. But who edits for you?

SR: I use my AllBooks Review editor, Lisa Haselton. I value her opinion highly.

CB: Why should authors consult with a proofreader and an editor? Can you explain the benefits to their writing careers?

SR: Every author should have their work edited professionally. Most publishers of reputation will not publish a book with typos, grammatical errors, etc. The book reflects upon the author and the publisher, and every author should put forward their best work. As a reviewer, I see many books that would have been greatly improved and more saleable if edited before publishing.

CB: What websites can we visit to learn more about you, your books and your review services?

SR: You can visit: allbookreviews.com and

booksbyshirleyroe.bravehost.com for more information.

CB: Shirley, I want to thank you for joining us here at Writer’s Block this month. I’ve enjoyed getting to know you better. Is there anything else you would like to tell the readers that I may not have covered in this interview?

SR: I appreciate all of the readers that have purchased my books and encourage anyone that has not to do so. Martha Whittaker’s story appeals to readers of all ages. AllBooks Review is here to serve upcoming authors; we offer an excellent author promo package for less than $50. Contact us today.

CB: How may we contact you?

SR: Visit the AllBooks site: www.allbookreviews.com or email me at allbookreviews@aol.com or Sroebooks@aol.com

Cindy, I thank you for this interview and appreciate your time.
